Rabbit Awareness Week 2010

Today is the first day of Rabbit Awareness Week (26th April – 2nd May), which aims to promote the best rabbit care and well being.

This year, RAW’s main focus is the growing problem of rabbit obesity, caused by poor and incorrect diet alongside little or no exercise. The provision of  balaRabbit Awareness Weeknced rabbit food diet and space to run around, such as a rabbit run or enclosure is essential. Rabbits will become bored as well as overweight if they’re are not fed correctly and given too little exercise. Obesity is a serious problem for any rabbit, and can put them more at risk of other life threatening problems such as flystrike due to a lack of hygiene brougt on by being overweight.

During Rabbit Awareness Week, many veterinary surgerys across the nation are providing free health checks for pet rabbits, giving owners advice on giving their pet the best care to keep rabbits healthy and active. They’re there this week to give new owners tips on rabbit hutches, rabbit food, rabbit enclosures, rabbit health products and any other aspects of rabbit care.

Rabbits are currently the third most popular pet in the United Kingdom, but unfortunately, many rabbit owners are lacking an in depth understanding of their pet, in order to provide the necessary care. Rabbits are commonly mistaken for the perfect child’s pet, leaving them vulnerable to being bought on impulse, with no real thought for their quality of life in the long run.
